Have a go at a Twitter Chat!

Have you heard about using Twitter in the classroom? No idea how to use it or where to start? Never fear you can learn anything. Yesterday I hosted my first Twitter Chat as part of NZ Readaloud. I have participated in one a few years ago but am in no way an expert. I don't use twitter myself so don't really get it but we went for it and it was hugely successful and highly engaging.

Steps to twitter success:

1- sign up to twitter and give your self a username (or handle) that is your class or teacher name eg mine is @TurepoAshgrove because our Year 7/8 team is Tūrepo at Ashgrove School. Make a password that will be simple for your class to use.

2- Teach digital citizenship and how to tweet sensibly

3- Model tweets that include the students name, school and the hashtag eg #NZraTomo

4- Check the time and date of the twitter chat. If you are hosting let others know what time and date to meet.

5- If you are hosting prepare a few prompts or questions and schedule them to tweet out during the time.

6- Enjoy the connection and engagement of your students!

  1. Hi Fiona it is Kerri here! Thank you so much for hosting the Twitter chat last week. I love it when I see other teachers realise the value of this social media platform to connect and share and learn together. I also used to see most of my kids fully engaged for the whole time when we were participating.

Thanks also for adding in some instructions that other teachers can use to get started. As always - the photos are fab - love seeing #NZreadaloud in action!

Can you please ask your students what it is about a Twitter chat that they like - I would love to hear what they have to say. They could reply under my comment here.
