Mathematics - The approximate depth of the Tomo Blue is currently in. By Terry Fowler (Room13, Tamatea Intermediate
Last night my mum and dad helped me to work out the depth of the Tomo.
We looked at the equation of motion which is:
s =ut+1/2at²
s = distance (m)
u = starting speed (m/s)
t = time (s)
a = acceleration (m/s/s)
Gravity = 10m/s/s
But the easy way to do it is 5x seconds²
This is the equation that my whanau and I used to find out the depth of the tomo that Phil threw the rock down.
5 x 7² = 5 x49
= 5 x 50
= 250 - 5
= 245m
But the terminal velocity reached at 4 seconds distance, 80m approximately means that the rock fell at only 40m/s for the last 3/7 of the tomo and that means that the depth of the tomo is about 140m.
This is a picture of Harwood's Hole, (350)m deep, which gives a perspective of how deep the tomo is in the text
Hi there Terry it is Kerri here. WOW I am super impressed that you have taken the time to research into the depth of The Tomo! Thank goodness for mums and dads who understand such things like what you have shared! Just brilliant.
ReplyDeleteHoley Moley the tomo was deep huh! The photo you have included really does help to visualise the depth. Poor Blue - and poor Phil! He really did take on a very risky mission aye.
Do you think you would take the same risk if this happened to your dog?
